After having plenty of beach vacations, we decided to seek out a new adventure, leading us to consider exploring forests and going on a jungle safari. This idea inspired us to organise a brief journey to visit the three national forest reserves in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala - Mudumalai, Bandipur and Muthanga
Our journey began early in the morning from Kozhikode, passing through Nilamboor, Vazhikadavu, and Gudalur before reaching Masinagudi in Tamil Nadu. Masinagudi is located in close proximity to Theppekkad, where the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve jeep safaris commence. Additionally, the renowned Elephant camp is situated nearby.
Upon our arrival at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, we were fortunate to witness a variety of wildlife on both sides of the road, including Elephants, Deer, Monkeys, Peacocks, and Wild Buffalos. However, spotting a Tiger, Bear, or Black Panther requires a stroke of luck.
Our stay at The Nest Inn, a charming resort in Masinagudi with stunning views of Nilgiris, was delightful. The resort was cozy, served homely food, and provided a pleasant experience. After check-in, we took some time to explore the area and then, in the evening, we went to visit the Elephant Camp at Theppekkad. We can buy tickets from the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve reception for both elephant camp visit and jungle safari.
This trip to the elephant camp will always be cherished, as I had the opportunity to meet Bommiah and Belli Amma, who were highlighted in the Academy Award-winning documentary film - The Elephant Whisperers.
After strolling through the narrow alleys of Masinagudi, we had dinner and then retired for the night.
The following day, we began our journey early around 5:30 am, making our way to the tiger reserve's reception area where our gypsy was ready to take us on a safari drive through the core zone of the jungle. We managed to see Elephants, Deer, Monkeys, Peacocks, although we weren't fortunate enough to spot a Tiger, but we did come across a few paw prints :)
Following breakfast and check-out, we proceeded towards Bandipur National Park in Karnataka. We alighted at a spot where we could catch the Karnataka KSRTC bus to reach Himwad Gopalaswami peak, home to a temple. The vistas from the peak are breath taking. We enjoyed our time there, afterwards, drove to Gundalpettu.
Gundalpettu is renowned for its vast farms that cover hectares of land. In addition to vegetables, farmers in this area also grow flowering plants. The fields present a stunning sight when filled with blooming flowers.
Continuing our journey towards Sultan Battery in Kerala, we passed through Bandipur and later Muthanga Forest. Driving through the forest is incredibly calming. Keep your car windows open, listen to the forest sounds, savour the freshness of the breeze, and observe the wildlife in its natural habitat. It is a fascinating and enjoyable experience.
We returned to Kozhikode by evening after a fantastic journey through the forests of southern India.
