A day trip to Kochi - Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Marine Drive were in the itinerary.
We started from Thrissur at around 6 am and drove to Fort Kochi, first to see Chinese fishing nets. It seems like not many places in the world has functioning Chinese fishing nets to catch fish, like what we see in Fort Kochi. It was an interesting sight. The nets are submerged into water every 10-15 min and when raised, has fish in it. Local sellers clean and sell these fresh fish in small stalls near by.
Almost all Fort Kochi attractions are within 1-2 km radius that it is so easy to walk around and explore the place. We visited St Francis Church, Santa Cruz Cathedral, Bastian Bungalow. Princess Street is famous for cafes, restaurants, shops and gets busy with tourists and visitors.
The streets and buildings are all quite different here, in style, architecture etc. It gives more of an Anglo feel. Kochi has several areas for Indian Navy, also the Kochi Port is quite a busy one with several ships and cargo business. As we drive around, we can see the harbor and shipyard as well.
After Fort Kochi, we drove to Mattancherry, visited Mattancherry Palace, Jain Temple, Jewish Synagogue, Jew Town. We had lunch at a nice restobar by the backwaters.
After lunch, we drove to Kerala Folklore Academy. It houses a huge collection of antiques, artifacts and displays Kerala's culture and heritage.
Later, we drove to Marine Drive to walk around and enjoy sunset.
That was our day trip to Kochi! Here are a few family moments:
